Captain Morgan Bateson has a complicated history with “time.” His ship, the U.S.S. Bozeman, was caught in a temporal causality loop for 90 years. He’s since adjusted to the 24th Century, but his experience makes him an extremely desirable recruit for a special agent from the 31st Century: Daniels!
In the far future, hostile factions engage in a “Temporal Cold War.” Some want to use time travel technology to change the past, while others - like the Federation - want to protect historical continuity. Just as it seemed that the Federation had prevailed, someone changed the timeline to strike directly at the 31st Century. Things were altered to result in “The Burn” of 3069: a galaxy-wide disaster where almost all dilithium went inert and every warp core exploded, crippling space travel in the Milky Way and causing the near total dissolution of the Federation.
Daniels explains to Bateson that while there is “a” future where the Burn happens, his mission - should Bateson choose to accept it - is to make sure that it is not “our” future.
To accomplish that, Daniels offers Bateson command of the U.S.S. Avenger, with a hand-picked crew and a temporal displacement drive. Apparently all the Captain has to do is prevent a Kelpien ship from crashing in the Veribun Nebula in 3064. Sounds easy enough, right?
Not so! For the QeylIS MaQmIgh, a radical Klingon doomsday cult from the future that arose as the result of the Burn, is invested in making sure that the Avenger fails its mission! Today may be a good day to die!
